Alt Weir Removal Planning

Plans are currently being explored for removal of the only major weir on the River Alt which is a barrier to fish migration

Plans are underway to explore the removal of the only major weir on the River Alt. The project is currently in its development and planning phase, with a focus on delivering the greatest possible environmental benefits while also reducing safety risks for the local community.

As part of our due diligence process, we are working to confirm the legal ownership of the structure.

Do you own this weir? Do you know who does?

We’re inviting local residents, landowners, and stakeholders to share any information that could help identify the weir’s owner. Establishing ownership is our preferred route before progressing with works, although it is not essential.

If you do have any information about the ownership of the weir, please email us at: info@merseyrivers.org

The weir is known to hinder fish migration, limiting the natural movement of species throughout the catchment. Its removal would be carried out under the Environment Agency’s permitted development rights and is expected to deliver significant ecological improvements, enhancing habitat connectivity across the River Alt.
Subject to confirmation and planning, works are anticipated to take place in late summer, supported by a blend of European and UK funding.
