Take a look behind the scenes at our partnership with Bentley Motors, making environmental improvements to the Valley Brook near to Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, UK.
The Valley Brook is in poor ecological status because of a range of pollutants including sewage, agricultural run off, and chemicals. Along with the Rivers Trust, we are working with Bentley across the whole of the catchment to make a difference to the water and wildlife here.
- Creating wetland areas and reconnecting the river to its floodplain.
- Engaging with the local community so they can share their thoughts and opinions on the plans and get involved in by monitoring and maintaining the area.
- Water quality and invertebrate sampling.
- Engaging with businesses and local farmers so they know what they can do to help improve the water quality.
The Valley Brook feeds into the River Weaver, which in turn joins the River Mersey. Returning the brook to its wild shape helps reduce flooding which has been a problem here in recent years.
Contractors have been on site this autumn to dig new ponds, shape the embankments and get the ground ready for re planting.
Together with volunteers from Bentley HQ, we planted over 3,000 native wetland plants which will improve water quality and support biodiversity. These plants will take root over the winter months to provide food, shelter and much more.
